The US Navy circumference method estimates body fat from neck, waist and hip measurements rather than a scan. It is accurate to roughly ±3–4% when measured carefully, so a single measurement is a guide rather than a precise figure. Measure first thing in the morning, keep the tape level and snug without compressing the skin, and repeat at the same time of day to track change.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure body fat at home?

The US Navy method used here needs only a tape measure: your neck and waist for men, plus your hips for women. It is not as precise as a DEXA scan but it is consistent enough to track change over time.

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

For men, roughly 8 to 19% is typically classed as fit to average. For women, roughly 21 to 32%. Women naturally carry more essential fat than men.

Is a body fat calculator accurate?

Circumference methods are estimates, accurate to within a few percentage points for most people. They are most useful for spotting a trend across repeated measurements taken the same way each time.
