FormulaIdeal weight
Devine (1974)70.5 kg
Robinson (1983)68.9 kg
Miller (1983)68.7 kg
Hamwi (1964)72.0 kg

Ideal body weight formulas were written for drug dosing and insurance tables, not as personal targets. They all assume a base weight at 152.4 cm (5 ft) and add a fixed amount per additional inch, which means they ignore frame size, muscle mass and age. Use BMI, waist measurement and how you feel as more meaningful guides.

Frequently asked questions

What is ideal body weight?

Ideal body weight (IBW) is a formula-derived reference weight for your height and sex, originally created for medical dosing. It is a statistical reference point, not a personal target or a judgement about health.

What is adjusted body weight?

Adjusted body weight is used clinically when someone weighs considerably more than their ideal weight. It is calculated as IBW plus 40% of the difference between actual and ideal weight, and is mainly used for drug dosing.

Which ideal weight formula is best?

There is no single best one. Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi each produce slightly different answers because they were derived from different populations. This calculator shows all four so you can see the range.
